Being inspired by the many great subway art tutorials lately, I wanted to include a version in our home. A movable version and the master bedroom seems to be the perfect spot.

An easy piece to make that can speak volumes with just a few simple words.
To make: We used extra pieces of wood we had laying around and added home-made stencils. First I painted the wood the under color, then printed and cut out the stencils. I used the temporary instructions to spray adhere the words directly onto the wood.

Then I coated the whole piece in the top coat, doing 2 very careful coatings so the paint wouldn’t run.

We let it dry, pulled off the stencils and hung it up- drilling right into the wall. I love having these words right above our bed, so sweet to look at as I lay down at night.
I wonder what words do you enjoy seeing as you rest your head to sleep?

I am now thinking of making one for the nursery that says, “WE LOVE THEM”. It is pure joy to see these sentiments showcased in our home.

I have finally finished the lamp project. However a warning, this really isn’t a D.I.Y- it is more of a D.I.DON”T.
I started with a need for an overhead light in our front room. Since we all know by now that hubby is vehemently against hard-wiring rental homes. We opted to swag the lamp (sounds so seventies and cool). For the size of the room it needed to be large (20 inches) to be centered on the ceiling and not look dinky.
An issue- large modern oval lamp shades are super expensive, so instead of buying we opted to make it. Enter in the most amazing step dad ever who went out in the garage and in about ten minutes welded me a frame.
Awesomest ever.

I planned to cover the frame with fabric- project done. I didn’t get enough fabric though (my high school geometry skills eluded me). I then decided I would make it out of string. Yes, you heard right- string. Hundreds and hundreds of 10 inch pieces cut and tied only to realize I would actually need thousands upon thousands and would honestly never finish the project.
At this point, a little discouraged but still hopeful, I cut all of the string off and started over using the original fabric + an accent fabric in overlaying strips. It was 11pm at this point and I thought my shade looked just lovely. It wasn’t until next morning I became painfully aware of how ghetto this solution looked. It looked so bad the dog just stood and there barking at it all morning- yikes!

It was appropriately nicknamed, the zombie shade.
I took it all down, vowed to use the wonderfully made lamp frame one future day and in the meantime purchased a lovely smaller shade. I moved the whole project over a few feet where my 10 inch Target find looks just fine.
Plus, I cut up pieces of the zombie fabric and made a few flowers to liven up the new shade.

Reminding me that sometimes it is better just to buck up and buy, you can always adjust the store version- adding a few flowers makes anything seem a bit more lovely.

I had planned today to show you the lamp I am making for our front room. However, at the last minute I decided to go in a different direction with it and turned a 20 minute project into something that may take me 300 years! I will let you know when it is done.
In the meantime, a simple solution for renters everywhere.
I have carried these sconces around for 3 years waiting for the perfect spot for them. They match our chandelier that my hubby has taken out and rewired every time we move (he also does the ceiling fan and the nursery light for me) making him basically the best ever.

After much begging he (rightly so) decided against my advice to break into the walls of our rental and install hard wiring, but I desperately wanted to hang the pretty sconces anyway. At first I just thought they would be for decoration but then I found these battery operated push button lights. Genius!
Adhered to the top of the scone shade with sticky velcro. The simplest hard-wire solution ever.

A simple click when we want light and it is just like they are hardwired, but not, they are fake-wired.
Fakebatteryvelcrowired- my kind of decorating.

Did you know that in a climate where there is rain and moisture plants can actually grow???
I have been pleasantly surprised by this news lately and am so happy to be growing things. I have potted 2 little orange trees to brighten up our dreary front porch…

and set up a happy home for the birds to come and visit…

and an indoor herb garden (taking the place of the dreamed about vegetable garden once I realized how much work growing vegetables actually is) herbs are much easier and just as lovely.
Plus I painted the pots,

after which Matt kindly asked me to step away from the spray paint can and the chalkboard paint brushes.

Okay I will admit, this is turning into an addiction quickly. EVERYTHING in our home has gone the way of the spray can and chalk labels. It is just too easy…
and too much fun…
PS. It looks like the home tour is going over the promised one month allotment. I still have quite a few posts to share with you in the coming weeks, hope you don’t mind my little extension:)

In moving the twins room we have had the chance to adapt to their growing toddler needs. One of the obvious room fixes was to create a area were we could sit together and read. We created a spot on the ground that will prevent one baby from crawling right off the chair midway through the book, which honestly happens sometimes with two;)
Here is a glimpse at their new little reading corner-

We have had a wonderful time sitting and reading together these past nights. Here is my simple tutorial on how to create your own, nice quiet reading spot…
Start with a comfy little rug, ours is a blanket that doubles as an entertaining toy just incase the reading ever drags a bit.
Add to the blanket a low hanging shelf, low enough for your toddler to reach up and grab their own books to read (note: make sure the shelf is securely attached, those kiddos can be STRONG!)

Make it comfortable with a few friendly animals and a soft pillow or two.

Plus one little dude who is anxiously ready to read,

and a pint sized light, but beware everyone will need to have a chance at turning it off before saying goodnight.

Those my friends are the makings of a great little reading nook. Comfy, well stocked, streaming with light and easy to move just incase we change our minds about it all…
…but I don’t think we will.
It has become quite lovely to us already.

One of the more beneficial oddities of our new home is the 3 bedroom to 2 bedroom conversion it underwent some time ago. Because of this renovation our master bedroom is about the size of two normal rooms with two closets and a great little side nook. We decided this would be the perfect place for a design office.

I am ubber excited about this space. Over the past year my time spent blogging has rapidly increased, as well as my collection of very sharp (read:harmful to babies) supplies- so working from the kitchen table was not very practical any longer.
Now I have a lovely area to design, read/work in and I feel so blessed by it.
The details:
Since you are all aware of my obsession with spray paint let’s start there. I found a cheap Ikea chair in need of a little love. I used a bottle of mustard yellow spray to cheer it up. I also attached a few embroidered butterflies from a piece of ruined fabric- they make me smile and inspire me to design.

The shelf hanging behind the chair is going to become an inspiration area for words and ideas that I love.
It was important to me to have my craft supplies and sewing machine handy in this space. I am sure you can relate to how difficult it is to work when you have to lug heavy items in and out of storage, hopefully handy will equal useful.
I used a few leftover pasta jars to organize the small items and chalkboard paint became a great way to label everything. Little Chica helped me write in the word “buttons” and it came out so imperfectly lovely I just had to keep it that way.

We also spray painted peg board for the wall and I covered an old art canvas with fabric to make a pin board for design projects and inspiration. The desk is actually a “dressing table” that I received for Christmas. I love how long it is, I can spread out 2-3 projects at a time and quickly become very sidetracked productive;)

My last little favorite detail of this area is the magazine holder. It was originally bare wood and boring. I covered it with scrapbooking paper and found a sheet of the loveliest yellow laser-cut butterfly paper. It came out so pretty I want to make a whole shelf of them… maybe even a whole room.

Speaking of inspiration, how sweet is this headband- it goes perfectly with the office decor of mustard yellow and garden green. I believe we were dreaming on the same wave length- thanks to Chelsea for the great present, now Chica may end up being a part of her momma’s office after all.

Every time we move it seems there are always one or two areas that just don’t fit. In this house, the main challenge has been three ginormous and very bare living room windows.
We needed curtains that were not see through since this is our main family living space for evening. I also wanted a bit of color to drown out the cabinesc wood walls- which by the way, don’t you love. I planned on painting them white but was sadly denied my request. They are growing on me though, we also bought this rad lamp and the room is taking on a somewhat 70’s-anchorman-wood-walled vibe which I am fondly begining to dig.

For the curtains we ended up using three blue queen duvet sets bought on clearance, and with a gift card! We cut each in half, then sewed the open seems and hung with drape clips. It was a simple and easy way to save on what could have been a very expensive purchase.
They add fun to our largest room. The one we use all day with the babies, and thankfully the curtains also cover us up at night- just incase we decide to jump around in our undies- wink, wink.

We have a few chairs in our home. Okay, we have a lot of chairs. It has been a running joke- every time we move, all the single guys we know come over to load up and proceed to gasp at the insane number of chairs they are asked to lift and haul into the truck.
Chairs for sitting, for dinning, for office, for rocking, for cuddling, chairs for patio, chairs for extra- just in case we need to have a dinner party for 20. Chairs galore.
This last move was going to be different. I was purposely planning on moving a smaller amount of chairs. Until I found an amazing deal of $5 each for new dinning chairs at the thrift store…

and then my in-laws passed down a pair of large wing back recliners which we had to bring and try as I might I couldn’t stand to part with the old dinning chairs, a little spray paint and they became oh so lovely.

Also we needed to add a few small seats for the babies to read at, so once again the guys made fun of me for all of the chairs, but thankfully I know I have a place for 20 butts just in case they show up all at once.
blessings.
PS. My new attachable flash is in the mail, thanks for being patient with the photos in the meantime.

The answer to our neighborhood trivia last week was…. The paint chipped beauty of age.
Your comments were so fun for me to read and I certainly agree that I would love the very cool knocker, or the sprite tree to be mine, yum! What I do have instead is a lovely house surrounded by beautiful wood and brick- covered in old chipped paint. To some this might be an area to improve on but for me the chipping is beauty, it is history, it is life lived out and I love it.
Without further ado I give you the contest winner. # Five-

Congrats to Missy, who actually got the answer right and even had a very logical reason why, “I bet its the paint chipped white gate…looks like the same tall trees as your sunset picture!” Way to think it through friend, I hope the covers will make you smile. For everyone else thanks for guessing and humoring me with the “why” behind your ideas they were all lovely.
Old chipped paint also serves as a great picture backdrop for a special occasion kind of day-

Today is a special occasion indeed: These shirts were given to us by our fertility doctor after the babies were born. It was Two years ago this week that we had our initial appointment- two years ago we walked into his office, scared but hopeful, trembling with anticipation.

Two years ago we began one of the most life altering experiences we would ever know, carried through it all by the loving hands of our God who brought us into a new way of life, into love deeper than we could have even imagined. A life of chipped paint, loud noises and messy toys. Beautiful to me.

I have always wanted a mantle in our home, over a wood burning fireplace, on a wall filled with bricks. Sometimes life just makes you smile and every once in awhile you get exactly what it is you would like.
Our mantel….

I love how warm and homey it makes me feel.

PS. The baby stools were a steal at $3 each- it’s great living near an Ikea.
PSS. The frame is an old trash on the street find that I spray painted orange. Consequently, I am becoming addicted to spray paint these days. Ev.er.y.thing that is not bolted down I am pulling out back to coat with a new color-it is such a cheap and lovely way to revamp a home.
