Advent Conspiracy- all wrapped up

12.22.09 Posted in Advent Conspiracy, Momhood

We are getting a lot wrapped up these days- presents for sure, but also life in Vegas.

It has been extra sweet spending time with our families and friends lately as we have been enjoying and blessing them in the small ways we are able. We have spent dinners laughing over wine and afternoons at the bookstore letting our babies wreck the place together. Joyful times of community and love have filled our hearts.

This week as we wrap up our twelve week Advent Conspiracy series, I thought I would share with you all a few things I learned along the way. First of all, thank you for taking this journey with me. Everything hasn’t panned out perfectly for our family this Advent season and I trust your season has also brought it’s own obstacles to overcome.

Conspiring for advent together, even through the trials, has allowed for an amazing time of reflection as we have conversed over the past months considering our traditions and the impact they will have on our families and communities.

Here are a few final thoughts:

  • It may not be practical or at all helpful to make every single gift! In creating the Holiday Homemade Gift List I got a little too excited and began to plan out many homemade gifts for ev.er.y.one in our family. Turns out homemade gifts can at times cost more and lead to greater stress during the rush of the season.
  • Instead we ended up focusing on a few lovely homemade things and tried for the rest of our gifts to “spend as little as possible but sacrifice and bless greatly”. I think this might be our mantra from the start next year. It was a lot of fun – we traded talents for gifts that family would enjoy, we used perks from Matt’s job to bless friends, we even found a few special things while out at the thrift stores.
  • No matter your gifting philosophy (here is one that I really liked) it is good to remember that our hearts focus can still be altered towards this world even on a tiny budget. We felt most alive and in love with Christ the days we chose to be generous with our time, money, and hearts towards people who really needed it. This doesn’t always fit into a box, it requires knowing people and sacrificially loving them.
  • A big part of how we can bless people during Advent is by the time we spend with them. Next year one of our main focuses will be how we can bless others during the season by our words and simple deeds of kindness.
  • Lastly, the celebration is about the birth of our savior and we should all stop what we are doing and truly celebrate! As Raymond Ortlund says, “Our lives have a need to be punctuated by celebration.” Over these next few days may we love greatly, give of ourselves generously, worship strongly and celebrate well to the glory of our God (even if that means sacrificing this weekends important to-do list filled with work).

I hope you will join me in learning to still your heart and find the JOY that lies in the grace of God given unto you.

Merry Christmas indeed!

Advent Conspiracy (feasting) + a present from me

12.16.09 Posted in Advent Conspiracy, Momhood, Printable, diy

As we narrow in on the ending of advent I hope your hearts have been encouraged this season by the blessing of God’s grace in your lives.

Are your mouths watering yet thinking of Christmas dinner? What traditions do your families hold surrounding food for the holidays? I am very much looking forward to our yearly tradition of Cinnabuns on Christmas morning, they are scrumptious. We also have a tradition of pizza & wings on Christmas Eve- so many fond memories are formed while feasting together.

I want to encourage you not to forget about Conspiring for Advent even while you eat. We can focus on spending less and giving away more of our money, or food, or time to others who are not able to feast. We can also bless those near to us by serving our family & friends as we eat together with extra love, extra care, and simply being ready to lend a helping hand.

Sometimes the most important blessing is just to listen and truly hear the stories they are telling. To help you in that endeavor I have created these place cards- an early Christmas gift from me to you.

christmas-place-holder-1

They are free to download and you can print as many as you want. There is a set of six cards attached in the download- they each have a different question to spark conversation with your family at Christmas.

Christmas place card download

Simply print the download (I have been told you have to save it first and then open for it to work) onto white card-stock, cut around the black edges and fold at the color line. You can write in your guests name or just leave it blank for a stack of fun conversation starters.

I am also handing off a page of gift tags I made from this design. You can print them out and save giveaway a few dollars instead of buying them.

single to-from

Christmas gift tag download

The file is in doc format because I am still learning how to do this and could not figure out how to link a large PDF download (if anyone knows please chime in). Please do not alter or change this design in anyway for profit, it is just a simple gift to make your Christmas more lovely.

Stringing Cranberry words.

12.14.09 Posted in Advent Conspiracy, Holiday, Momhood, diy

Every year about this time I get a little obsessed with cranberries. Eating them, decorating with them, no matter the use berries always seem to make my home a bit more lovely.

I spent a little time making a string of them last night. Have you ever strung Cranberries? It is super easy to do- just get a thick needle, thread and dive right in. They are easy to poke through but be careful to have protection because when one pops, and it is inevitable that one will, they do stain.

cran 1

In working with our decorations-that-must-be-disposable theme this year I wanted to incorporate a few words around our house. Cranberries seemed to be the prefect way to do that.

cranberries 4

For this project I used one small bag of the berries and about a yard of thread.

Thread enough cranberries for your entire word onto one length of thread. Then once you have the berries up on the wall arranged how you would like simply cut the thread off between the letters. To hang I used a nail/thumbtack combo but you could also use heavy tape or small mounting pieces.

Make one word to encapsulate your season or make a bunch to cover an entire wall for a striking display. I love how the simple word JOY looks above our bed.

cranberries 2

Fair warning from me- make sure your berry strings are out of the dogs reach;)

P.S. If you’d like an eatable Cranberry project instead THIS RECIPE is the only recipe I ensure is made every year! It is my favorite- the cranberries are perfectly sweet and look beautiful out on display. I have a batch waiting for me to sugar them later on today!

Making snowflakes in the desert.

12.07.09 Posted in Advent Conspiracy, Momhood, diy

I am excited to have the chance to be sharing with you this week all the lovely details of Dude and Chica’s first birthday party. While I get the pictures and my sappy emotions in order I thought you would enjoy making a few easy 3-D snowflakes today.

This project was inspired by a morning meandering through my favorite store where I happened upon the sales staff making snowflakes out of tissue paper, tulle and chicken wire for their winter window display. It looked so lovely I just had to recreate a similar project at home.

We used these props first for our winter photo shoot. They created a whimsical feeling of winter even in the desert. Here is a sneak peak-

christmas-snowflake1

After coming home I tied the two boxes together to make one large snowflake. It is lovely and it fits the free & recyclable Christmas decorating plan of the year.

Christmas snowflake 7

The snowflakes were made out of empty tissue boxes and white present paper. I first poked holes in all but one side of the tissue box. I stuffed it with the paper and used a bit of leftover tulle to give it that snowy bling. Super easy and basically free.

christmas-snowflake2

Now it hangs in our living room and where we can cozy up under it and pretend that it really is blistery outside.

christmas-snowflake 3

Is it snowing where you live? Lately, I have been really hoping for a white Christmas to visit us here in the desert.

Advent Conspiracy- Our Blessing Tree

12.03.09 Posted in Advent Conspiracy, Momhood

In the spirit of Advent Conspiracy and the focus on Christmas this year we are instituting a new tradition.

blessingtree8

A blessing tree- A small living tree that will be filled throughout the season with all the great blessings we have been given, recorded by our family & friends.

This season has been particularly trying on our family as we are in the middle of a move and a job change with two babies crawling circles around us. Finances are tight and a new chaotic situation seems to be ensuing each day. Yet, we still so desperately want to experience the peace and joy that symbolize this great season. Already though, it has begun to get lost amidst the struggle- I trust in at least some way you can relate.

What better to do than focus on the many, many blessings in our lives?!?

Whenever we feel particularly blessed we will write it down on a paper ornament and then hang it on our tree.

blessingtree3

We will also be encouraging our guests throughout the season to write down a blessing they have received this year. Near the tree sits a stack of ornaments just waiting to record the blessings of our friends and family.

blessingtree 2

Beyond the blessing ornaments we are keeping the decoration of the tree very simple only red lights and a few special symbols of the Christmas season.

blessingtree1

I have great hope that our hearts will be inspired through this tree.

With initials printed on the back of each paper we will be able to save the blessings to look back on years from now…

when the chaos has died down and we will understand even greater how truly we were blessed this Christmas.

blessingtree6

What are you blessed by this season?

MERRY CHRISTMAS

Homemade modern Advent Wreath

11.30.09 Posted in Advent Conspiracy, Momhood, diy

The hustle and bustle of Christmas has officially begun! I am savoring the beginning of this season pulling out decorations, drinking hot cocoa and setting my new favorite Pandora station to play non-stop around around the house.

We are focusing this year on celebrating the complete season of Advent so it seemed necessary to have a traditional advent wreath guiding us through the weeks. Here is my mostly-free-to-make, disposable (since we are moving), modern take on the tradition.

advent wreath 2

I used our left over wine bottles from the Thanksgiving centerpiece and put 2 coats of white spray paint on them. Then I shaved down four taper candles to fit inside the bottles and surrounded it all with moss balls for a simple, modern take on the traditional evergreen wreath.

advent wreath 3

Each bottle is wrapped with ribbon and has an important Advent word affixed to the front for our family to consider as we enjoy the festivities in these weeks leading up to Christmas.

advent wreath 1

We celebrated the first Sunday last night by lighting a candle and reading a chapter from our new Advent book. Each week we will light one of the candles, read together and savor the passing of the season. On Christmas day all four bottled candles will glow as well as the single taper in the middle symbolizing the center and purpose of the season for us- the birth of our Lord.

*PS. This project was inspired by the beer-bottle-Menorah seen in the December 2009 issue of Ready Made.

2009 Advent Calendar

11.12.09 Posted in Advent Conspiracy, Momhood, diy

It’s finally done after a few alterations and tweaks, I am happy to share with you our 2009 Advent Calendar.

Advent Conspiracy is more than just a guide for buying gifts to us. We believe that participating will change Christmas for us this year. We are hoping in the years to come it will allow us to worship more fully and allow our whole family enjoy the holiday with more sincerity. For our kids this doesn’t mean just saying no to Santa, it also means creating activities to allow them to worship throughout the season and establishing traditions that will encourage them to understand why we are celebrating.

It was from this notion that our Advent Calendar was conceived.

I started with 25 words that I felt epitomized the season. Words that I hope will deepen my kid’s understanding of all the hoopla going on around them this time of year.

a cal 25 words

I received the red date labels as a gift but you could easily make something like this at home using photoshop or even construction paper. I took each word and assigned it a day writing it directly on the calendar where it could be seen throughout the month.

Click here to download my 25 words for Advent

Then I came up with activities that would transcend kids of all ages. Read-sing-gift-create-color-design-act. Activities we could do with each of our children tweaked in slightly different way for age appropriateness through the years. I printed these words out on strips of paper.

a cal words

I then sewed my labels onto burlap fabric with a thick #5 needle and embroidery thread. I stitched the sides and bottoms leaving the top open to stuff.

a cal sew

In each day I tucked the strip of activity paper and then spent a little time writing down the age appropriate ways we could celebrate the specific word of that day.  Some of them are very simple like day 14’s reading from Isaiah on how Jesus dwelt with us. Some days are more complicated- On day 15 we will give a secret gift to someone who we know will rejoice upon it’s receiving.

a cal 4

Stuffing your calendar with activities is a great alternative to candy but you could also stuff each day with a piece of chocolate or a special treat along with the activity.

The finished product was stapled onto canvas and hung by a ribbon.

a cal finished

Obviously this year the focus of our family celebration will revolve around the adults and in small ways (singing and reading) when we can include the babies. In the future though we will focus on activities that will allow our children to celebrate Christmas using these 25 words on a yearly basis. Repetition and activity breads understanding in young minds.

I am giddy in anticipation of all the fun and worshipful ideas we will enjoy through this tradition.

Drawing what a child perceives is holy. Going to serve someone who is poor. Acting out ways we can love one another. Caroling down the street with joy.

These are the ways our children will learn to truly treasure the Christmas season.

Advent Conspiracy (6)- The big-red man

11.04.09 Posted in Advent Conspiracy, Momhood

Since we have begun talking about Advent Conspiracy this year the question I am most often asked is, “what about Santa“? This may not matter to you but I feel compelled to explain our view since the giving of gifts is such a major way we worship and celebrate the advent season.

If you do celebrate Christmas with Santa Claus being a part, I do not think you are a bad parent-Christian-American or anything else. This is a preference/conscience issue to us and I know MANY of you are wonderful, amazing and think differently. I would only encourage us all to think through what we do to celebrate Christmas and every event in our lives. Testing our actions against scripture to ensure that our lives and holidays are honoring to the Lord as well as fun and encouraging to our children.

santa baby1

Our sweet newborn Santa baby

F.A.Q.

Will Santa not be a part of your Christmas Celebration?

We will not be teaching our kids about Santa Claus per say. We will not be lying to them making up a character who judges them throughout the year on their behavior and then rewards them accordingly. Honestly, it seems anti-biblical to me to lie to my children. It seems that it would create the beginnings of legalism in their hearts- if I do good I get presents, if not I get coal.

We will relish with our kids in the great and glorious scriptural story of Christmas. We may even include the story of Kris Kringle explaining how he was the beginning of the Santa myth and encouraging them to be generous in giving gifts as this mighty saint of the faith was. When they are old enough I look forward to sneaking around and delivering presents in stockings, on door-steps, in the dark to encourage love and giving.

It is our hope that the entirety of our family traditions will be to worship God and love others. I can not seem to find an honest place for the modern myth of Santa in this experience.

Does that mean your kids won’t get presents?

As obvious from previous Advent Conspiracy posts, we believe in presents around here to show love and kindness to those we care about. Our children will receive presents as a part of the Christmas celebration. Their presents will say love mom & dad on the tags. The hope is that they will feel loved and cared for by us, by their family, not some creepy guy who sneaks in their chimney and eats up all the cookies. Think about it, pretty odd!

But Santa is such a big part of the holiday, won’t your children end up demented and chain-smoking-high-school-drop-outs if they don’t sit on his lap?

No. There are successful and well adjusted adults of many different faiths who had wonderful holidays growing up without Santa.

Are your kids going to squeal and ruin our Christmas?

I hope not. As we explain to them our family’s Christmas traditions and explain the traditions practiced around us we hope our kids will respect the beliefs of their friends and not ruin the fun and joy. However, even if they do, we must live, give, and worship God the in the ways we deem right. I will just go ahead and apologize a few years in advance, in case this happens, thanks for understanding.

What about you? Do you celebrate Christmas with Santa, why or why not?

BLESSINGS

P.S. I am giddy with excitement to share with you the Advent Calendar I have been working on for next Wednesday. It will be a great resource to encourage wonderful celebration with children of any age!

Homemade/D.I.Y. Christmas present list

10.27.09 Posted in Advent Conspiracy, Momhood, diy

The ultimate Homemade/D.I.Y./relational Christmas gift list.

This is my gift to you in hopes that you will not have to be the one giving out snuggies this Christmas season.

snuggie

A few questions answered before you read on:

What is this list about?

For the first time this year we are participating in the Advent Conspiracy.
The idea behind these presents is that we give of ourselves in the ways God gave to us- by sacrificing our time, energy, resources, gifts. By not randomly shelling out money so people will feel loved, but by actually knowing people and giving of ourselves we can truly love them for Christmas.

Why does stuff on this list cost money to make?

The point of Advent Conspiracy is not to scrooge out Christmas. We can spend our money, energy, and resources loving people. We give to the people in our lives because Christ gave for us. We will save money by not buying gifts and we can give that away to love people we don’t know- people who need it greatly.

If I am on Vicky’s gift list is my present listed below?

Maybe… Maybe not…

The Advent Conspiracy challenge 2009: Buy one less gift- give that money away to provide clean water. One less gift…
